The Technicians Trap

If you have a technicians mindset your business is in trouble.

You probably started your working life as a technician of some sort. A technician is someone who 'does' the work, and is praised for their skills and output.

As a business owner, the paradigm shifts. No longer do you focus on your personal output.

You have a responsibility to guide the output of others towards value creation for your customers (even solopreneurs must successfully guide themselves).

It is sufficient for a technician to 'do the work'. But an owner must ask 'why' and relentlessly align work to create value for their customers.

Immediate Action:

  • Take an activity that gets done on a daily basis.

    • Ask:

      • Why do we do this?

      • Does it add value to our customers?

      • If we didn't do this, would our customers mind?

      • What tweaks to this activity could we make to cause customers to say 'wow, I love this!'

I would love to hear of any surprising results from this short activity!
